    How fast should backups run?

On my 8 core 3.4 ghz PC, I have a SSD for the C: drive. Watching Paragon Backup & Recovery 17 CE run (via the task manager->performance monitor), I saw the SSD source drive with a read rate of about 350 mbytes/sec for a while (quite respectable), but now I see a read rate of 20-30 mbyets/sec from the source SSD drive, and a write rate of only about 21 mbytes/sec on the destination USB drive (USB 3.0, 7200 rpm drive). Also, the destination USB disk is only 10-15% busy

Copying a single file to the USB drive, I see a consistent write rate of 150 mbytes/sec. Why is B&R 17 CE almost seven times slower?

I said copying a single file to my USB backup drive showed 150 mbytes/sec, but copying a large number of small files (for example, from a website backup with lots of log files), runs much much slower. Something in the range of only a few mbytes/sec.
