SurfacePro4 with Hard Disk Manager rescue media: Linux EFI: Stuck at disk image

Following on from my previous post I am now trying to restore drive C from the incremental backup (VD) stored on a network drive. I have Linux EFI images on USB and DVD. To get either of these to load I have to disable the secure boot on the Surface Pro 4 then tell the SurfacePro4 to boot from the USB drive. For both the DVD and the USB drive I get the option menu loading. If I select full or safe the same thing happens. The menu disappears to be replaced with an image of a disk drive with coloured lines going across it, and then the program just sits there for ever.

    So I'm stymied again.

I've even downloaded the most recent update but get the same result.
