View Full Version : How to use image file to replace C drive
I have downloaded your Home edition and am trying to decide whether to purchase it or not.
I have an image of my old C drive. Rather than continue to use that drive I want to put the image onto a brand new C drive. How do I do that and make sure that the new drive appears in Windows XP as the C drive?
Note I do not want to simply copy the old drive to the new one. I want to use the image file to install the new drive.

If I read your question correctly then you are looking to physically replace your current C: drive with another physical drive?
If so this should be straightforward, and you won't suffer any data loss.
1) You have your disk image of your C: drive already (if not, make one).
2) Make sure you have a bootable CD with the backup software on.
3) Physically replace the C: drive with a new drive. Put the old C: drive in a safe place.
4) Boot from the CD.
5) Perform a restore from your disk image to the new C: drive.
If it goes pear-shaped you can always put the old C: drive back into the PC.

Hi everyone, I think you are mixing the meanings of HDD and partitions. C: is a partition and the physical device you insert into PC is Hard Drive. The basic idea was to replace old HDD with new one and sure have partition C: from old one on new HDD without any need to install drivers and software. This procedure is called Upgrade of system drive. I have found an article in Paragon Knowledge Base that includes guidance for this procedure: http://kb.paragon-software.com/paragon/include/templ/object2.jsp?objId=1390
This one recommends using Copy HDD or Partition operation but sure, the steps written by Andrew are also possible.
