Is there any prediction when drive backup would allow backup and restore of a single e partition under vista?

I've looked at the Vista Support Matrix for Personal Edition 8.51 and I can't
figure out if I can install and use it on Vista Home Premium 64 bit.(I don't
have the PC yet to try it but I'm preparing for the changeover).

Do I have to boot the Linux CD to do a backup or can I install the Windows version and run it from there?

You can do both of these, Drive Backup has now full support of Vista. But I must note, that support of Vista 64 bit is available only starting from Professional Edition. That is, Personal Edition won't run on this machine, you need Professional one.
