View Full Version : Drive won't mount, lost all data due to corrupted FAT

Yesterday my NTFS formatted Firewire backup drive failed to mount upon a restart of my Mac. Turns out the FAT was lost/corrupted and perhaps even the partition table too (there was only one partition on there so hard to tell).

Plugging the drive back onto a windows machine hasn't worked, in fact windows cannot read the drive either (although why would it, if there's been a FAT/PT loss).

The entire set of data on the drive is gone, and whilst I have an off-site backup, it's probably only 80% of what I lost as it's a week or so old!

I was successfully using the trial version (not sure what version, but downloaded it about 10 days ago) and then purchased a full copy - including downloading the absolutely latest version it pointed me to post-purchase.

That version is v6.5.1

To be honest, I'm wondering whether that caused the problem. However, I've also been manipulating large files (well 1-2gig) and I also installed the latest OSX update (10.5.3).

I've put in a request to support, but honestly, I'm not sure what they'll be able to do to help.

I've read a lot of problems about file corruptions on this forum, but have people had complete drive problems - with loosing FAT's and partition tables?

Thanks,
Ben
