Okay...so I was using macfuse and NTFS-3g and it was working awesome on my macbook pro but then i plugged it into my PC, and when I plugged it back into my mac, it became "read only" again, and no matter what I did, it wouldn't work again. I did disk check, etc.

So eventually I caved, invested the 40, and bought paragon NTFS. It appeared to be working (it said it could read and write) but then when I tried to transfer files from my mac HD into itunes (my library is stored on my external HD so the files attempted to transfer to it) and it failed everytime. I tried copying files from finder onto the drive, and those wouldn't transfer either.

So next I figured if I backed up the files on the HD, and then reformatted and reinstalled, it might work. Well while trying to backup my files, it created a bunch of corrupt files, and all 12 thousand and 5 thousand pictures are completely gone off the external HD!!!!!

I do have them backed up through time machine on another HD...so here are the questions

1. If I reformat the external HD to the mac format(HFS+ i think?), will I be able to get my files from time machine, and put them back onto the HD, even though it isnt NTFS format anymore? Or do I need to format it to NTFS again, and then install paragon or macfuse with ntfs-3g????

2. Is paragon not as stable as they make it sound?? Obviously so far it has givin me nothing but problems...

3. Is this my only solution?? I think in the end I will end up keeping it in mac format, even though preferably I would want it to be cross platform with my pcs...that is somewhat of a problem.

4. if I do need to use my HFS+ formated drive on a pc...can I keep the installiation file on a flash drive, install it on a friends computer, then read/write to my HD?? Or is that unstable??

5. This seems like nothing but trouble so far....although I would want my files to go from mac to pc (I like having the flexability and if I have files to take or trade with friends on PC, this is obviouslly the easiest thing), but at the end of the day, I want my files to be as safe as possible.

Please help!!

Is there any solution if I use windows XP with parallels?? Does this offer anything to where I can write to the drive, even on the mac OS side of things???

Hi,

The Paragon NTFS software is not very stable, especially with large files.

Check out some of the other "problem" threads on this very board.

Okay so what are my best options??? Keeping my hard drive formatted in mac format??? So basically to keep my files safe I can't have them work on windows systems??

Does anyone know anything about having a NTFS drive and having parallels on my computer....will that make my NTFS drive readable and writable within the mac system??

Parallels should do it.

The files can exist on the Mac and be accessed, modified, saved etc from XP (NTFS) in Parallels. You can put them all in a Parallels Shared Folder. There are a lot of options for configuring how much or little Parallels integrates Mac and OSX, fom "none" to "complete".

Edit: Not sure I have answered the right question here. I have done something similar. I wanted to put 60 Gb of photos onto an NTFS pocket drive for a customer. I fired up Parallels, connected it to XP. Made the Photo folder a Parallels Shared Folder, and dragged the 60 Gb folder from the PSF into the NTFS external from within XP. Was rather slow I seem to remember but worked.

Also NTFS for Mac v 6.0.13 has been the subject of much complaint in this forum as a cause of corruption, but last week Paragon seem to have silently introduced ver 6.5.1 which is a whole new animal. I haven't experienced corruption with 6.0.13 (but haven't used it for large files) so came here to read how folks were finding it corruption wise, but so far no reports...see my recent post about 6.5.1 very odd that Paragon have made no announcement about it.
