View Full Version : Won't allow me to copy partition

Hi,

I'm trying to copy my hard disk partition where all the system and programs are to another hard drive (with 400GB space). When I activate the Partition Copy wizard, it says that there's no space available for this.

For some reason, it doesn't seem to know that there's another disk available, even though that second disk is listed in the Volume Explorer.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
D

Hello DAL,

it seems to me that Partition Copy Wizard works (copies partition) with free unallocated space. This means that your 400GB space must be unallocated.
Maybe you want to create backup copy of partition instead of simple cloning? Then you need to use Drive Backup -> Backup Wizard that creates compressed file archive of your partition.
As for cloning partition, then your copy target disk should have unallocated space block.

Thanks AMS for the quick response.

A bit of follow-up...

RE: This means that your 400GB space must be unallocated.
How does one make it allocated? There's nothing on that drive yet (just got it).

RE: Maybe you want to create backup copy of partition instead of simple cloning? Then you need to use Drive Backup -> Backup Wizard that creates compressed file archive of your partition.

Is that the approach that is best for making an exact copy of the partition with system and program files, so if the main disk crashes, you can use the copied version?

Thanks!
DAL

Hi DAL,

looks like ams is right, if the copy partition wizard says that there is no free space, two variants are possible:
1. it can't detect your new HDD (but you say that it is presented within Volume Explorer, so, it should be detected by this wizard too)
2. it detects your new HDD but partition is already created there for some reasons

To make sure that it is detected and that there is no any partitions there, please switch to "Disc View" panel, make new HDD visble there (if it isn't visible yet), right click on it and check, does "Delete Partition" option is availible for selection or not? If yes, then please delete partition from new 400GB HDD (make sure that there is no usefull data there first) and Apply an operation. After that, Copy Partition wizard sholud find necessary space for copying withourt problems.

Best regards,
